The UK has pledged to maintain high standards of corporate governance, shareholder rights and transparency while modernising rules that govern how companies raise finance on public markets.
Reforms to make it easier for the world’s most successful innovative firms to list and grow in the UK, which include updating rules around free float requirements and dual class share structures, follow the UK Listing Review led by Lord Hill. Other recommendations include making it easier for companies to provide forward-looking guidance when raising capital by amending the liability regime and improving the efficiency of the listing process.
According to Hill, the proposed reforms will enhance the UK’s position as an international destination for equity listings, encourage investment in UK businesses, support the development of innovative growth sectors, such as tech and life sciences, and provide more opportunities for millions of investors to share in growth.
Many of the recommendations will require consultations by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority and all eyes will be on whether the reforms strike the right balance between being competitive and maintaining high corporate governance standards.
